Western Boreal Growth and Yield Project

The Western Boreal Growth and Yield (WESBOGY) Association first met informally in the mid 1980’s and established its Association Agreement at the University of Alberta and first 5-year business plan in 1996 with Dr. Steve Titus as chair. In 2020 WESBOGY membership included 7 forest companies, two provincial governments and the University of Alberta.  Members share an interest in forest growth and yield, stand dynamics, inventory and planning. WESBOGY has worked to improve the efficiency of growth and yield research and development efforts by facilitating data sharing; by supporting development of MGM and other growth and yield models, by developing and supporting the WESBOGY long-term study, and by providing a forum for communication.

In the spring of 2014, AFGO (Alberta Forest Growth Organization), MWMA (Mixedwood Management Association), FGYA (Foothills Growth and Yield Association) and WESBOGY members agreed to restructure in order to have all programs coordinated by a single organization called the Forest Growth Organization of Western Canada (FGrOW). WESBOGY became a Project Team within FGrOW beginning January 1, 2016 with WESBOGY continuing to be based at the University of Alberta. The WESBOGY project team chair is a faculty member at the University of Alberta who serves as grant holder and oversees project activities, the research scientist is a WESBOGY funded Research Professor. Member agencies serve important roles in identifying priorities, reviewing and approving workplans, and reviewing and discussing results.

Objectives:

The WESBOGY project is focussing on: 1) development of the Mixedwood Growth Model for predicting growth of stands in forests of the western boreal and Rocky Mountain foothills regions of Canada and support for its use; and, 2) a Long-Term Study initiated in 1990 to advance our understanding of the dynamics of spruce/aspen mixedwood stands which currently has 615 plots established across British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and the Northwest Territories.
